Being named a TUSKERS Scholar is not only a remarkable achievement but a proud milestone that reflects each student’s academic journey.

The Talented TUSKERS Program, also in its third year, is a proud celebration of the diverse talents and remarkable achievements of our students from Grades 1 through 12. We are proud to honor these students for their exceptional dedication and accomplishments in their chosen fields.

We are incredibly proud of all our scholarship recipients. Their achievements inspire our community and reflect the values we strive to uphold every day at BASIS. Congratulations once again!

College Counseling Corner

Greetings BISB Community,

Welcome to the College Corner, a snapshot of the College Counseling process at BASIS International School Bangkok.

Warm greetings from Singapore!

I’m currently in Singapore attending the GUCC (Global University Counselors Connect) and I’m excited to share more about this experience with you.

One of the true highlights of my trip so far was visiting Singapore Management University (SMU). Located in the heart of the city, SMU stands out for its dynamic learning environment, real-world connections, and student-centered approach. During my visit, I had the opportunity to speak directly with international students currently enrolled there including one who enthusiastically shared:

“Everyone at SMU is happy we are here and open to help. They’ve given us everything we need, including access to internships, collaboration opportunities, and many SMU t-shirts. I am very happy with my decision to attend.”

This genuine sense of community and support was echoed by university staff as well. What impressed me most is how SMU supports students who are still exploring their academic interests. If a student doesn’t arrive with a declared major, that’s perfectly okay—they are encouraged to spend their first year exploring a variety of disciplines while receiving guidance and mentorship from faculty and advisors. This flexibility allows students to make thoughtful, confident decisions about their academic path. I loved the campus and can easily see many of our students thriving there.

I also had the unique opportunity to visit the central office of Cialfo, the college counseling platform we use at BISB. It was inspiring to meet and talk with the co-founders, who originally met as students at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) right here in Singapore. From that university friendship, Cialfo was born—and today it is a global platform helping thousands of students navigate their higher education journeys. The team shared exciting updates about new tools and features that will soon make college planning even more personalized, data-informed, and accessible for our students.

Today, I’ll be engaging with fellow college counselors from around the world in discussions on current admissions trends and best practices in counseling. I’ll also be connecting with university representatives from Singapore and institutions across the globe—including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and beyond. These conversations are essential to ensure that I am bringing back the most up-to-date insights and opportunities to support your child’s goals—whether they’re looking close to home or far beyond.

I know many of our families are curious about university options in Singapore. After this visit, I’m more confident than ever that our students are not only well-qualified but will thrive in the academic and cultural environment Singapore has to offer. If you have any specific questions or would like to explore opportunities further, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m excited to support our students as they consider applying to universities in this vibrant and forward-thinking part of the world.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Best,
Ms. Kate Irving

Library Corner

Hello from BISB Library!

This month in the library we are exploring a student favorite, the Fantasy genre! This week for Early Years we focused on storytelling tools like setting and genre as we read The Most Boring Book Ever by Brandon Sanderson and illustrated by Kazu Kibuishi. For Primary students, we dove into the magical world of Fantasy as we read the wordless adventure book, Return by Aaron Becker. Both books wowed students with their colorful illustrations and exciting plot.

As we continue our exploration of the fantasy genre, I am excited to announce and invite the community to attend the library’s final event of the academic year: A Magical Mystery! This Harry-Potter themed escape room intertwines our love of the magical world, with the mystery solving of Sherlock Holmes. A Magical Mystery will be after school on Thursday, May 22nd from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. This free event is registration only and all attendees must arrive by 4 p.m. (no entry will be permitted after, even for registered attendees as this event is time sensitive). On arrival, primary and up students will be sorted into their BISB houses - note that EY students will be given a house and siblings will be kept together in the same house. While waiting to complete the escape room, students will also get to play the game of quidditch outside on the field (maximum 30 minutes)! Please bring hats and sunscreen for this activity. House-points and prizes will be awarded for both the Escape Room completion and participation in the Quidditch Matches.

To sign up, please use this link and register by Tuesday, May 20th: https://forms.gle/2ywRiJCEGRXdrX6c8 I hope to see you there!
