Early Years Newsletter:
Supporting Your Child’s Health through Proper Nutrition and Sleep
Dear Early Years Families,
Good nutrition and sufficient sleep are essential for children aged 2–6 as they support growth, focus, mood regulation, and overall well-being. Here's how you can help:
Nutrition Tips
- Children need balanced meals consisting of the five food groups—proteins, carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables, and fats—spread over three main meals and 1–2 healthy snacks daily. Include foods like whole grains, lean proteins, fresh fruits, and vegetables, and limit sugar and processed snacks.
- Milk is especially important; 2–3 glasses a day provide calcium for bone development. For young children, portion sizes should be age-appropriate: for example, 4 tablespoons of protein-rich foods and 3 portions of fruits daily can meet their needs.
Sleep Recommendations
- Children aged 2–5 need 10–13 hours of sleep daily to support brain and physical development. Consistent bedtime routines and limiting screen time before bed are crucial for quality sleep.
- Good sleep boosts focus, memory, emotional stability, and physical growth. It’s important to provide a quiet, dark, and comfortable environment for rest.
Both proper nutrition and sleep help children excel in school, manage emotions, and maintain good health. For more details, please refer to resources by the ThaiHealth Promotion Foundation, which offer guidelines tailored to young children in Thailand:
Thank you for your support in fostering your child’s growth and development.

Director of Early Years

Primary, Middle & High School Newsletter
Message from Dean of Primary School
Dear Families,
Last week our Primary assemblies were focused on KINDNESS. To encourage kindness across the school, our Primary students will be working across Grade levels and with some of our Early Years students in activities that will spotlight how we can evidence this very important Tuskers value. Some of our Grade 1 and 2 students also helped to create our “Be the ‘I’ in Kind” wall in the academic hall. We are excited to celebrate kindness across the school!

Many of our students are earning their Tuskers badges for their lanyards. We are so proud of their hard work, especially as they need THREE nominations to earn a badge. GO TUSKERS!

There have been a variety of illnesses going around the school this term. Our Nurse’s office has been busy! If your child has been excused from school with a doctor’s note, please ensure that your child stays at home to rest for the entirety of their sick note. While we miss them when they are away, we want to be sure that they are in good health and are ready to return to school. If you have any questions about this, please contact the school nurse directly.
Thank you for your continued support! We are grateful to partner with you in your child’s education.
Have a lovely weekend,
Dean Jenny,
Dean of Primary
College Counseling Corner:
Greetings BISB Community,
Welcome to the College Corner, a snapshot of the College Counseling process at BASIS International School Bangkok.
This is a very busy season at BISB, and with all the excitement and events I will keep this post simple.
On Tuesday, December 10, Mr. Ian, Mr. Toby, and I will have a Parent Coffee focused on middle and high school elective options, the course selection process at BISB, and an overview of how the BISB Curriculum prepares students for universities across the globe. Because this coffee is very content dense, we have also scheduled a more intimate coffee that focused on answering your specific and prevalent questions.
On Tuesday, December 17, Dean Andrew, Mr. Ian, Ms. Hannah, and I are offering a coffee for Grade 6 & 7 parents. This coffee will address commonly asked questions and offer more time for additional questions and answers.
On Thursday, December 19, our coffee morning will focus on Grade 8, 9, and 10 parents.
The new year is right around the corner, and we want you to head off to break excited for the future and confident in our plans.
In January, I will begin my 1-1 meetings with students in Grades 8-10. We will discuss summer options and plan out their schedule for next year (and options through to graduation). When it comes time for students to register for their 2025 courses, I will also meet individually with families to discuss course choices. Deciding on courses, careers, and colleges is complicated and can be quite stressful. I am here with you every step of the way. Think of me as your own private consultant who also knows everything about the BASIS Curriculum, summer opportunities nearby and far away, and the university application process to every university on the globe.
Thank you,
Ms. Kate Irving
College Counselor
Library Corner:
Hello from BISB Library!
The holiday break is almost here and BISB Library has a ton planned for the community before break. I am so excited to invite students and parents to an array of events including two special story times and a virtual discussion with American author Christina Li.
The first event will be POP! A Bubble Story Time, on Wednesday, December 11th from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. We will read the picture book, Pop!, written by Jason Carter Eaton and Matt Rockefeller and then together we will create unique art pieces using recycled bubble wrap. The event will end with bubble play outside near the Thai House. I hope to see many of you there!
The second story time will be on Wednesday, December 18th from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wear your favorite pajamas and get in the Christmas spirit with this Holly Jolly Christmas Story Time. We will read a few Christmas classics and enjoy some tasty hot cocoa! I encourage parents and students to check out books for the winter break after this event. Please note that moving forward that entry to library story times will close at 4:00 p.m. Please arrive within 30 minutes of the event start time.
Lastly, students in Grades 4 and up are invited to attend a virtual Q&A with American author Christina Li. This event is brought to you by BISB Book Club and will be during the school day from 12:20 p.m. to 12:55 p.m. This event is registration only and a unique opportunity for students to discuss creative writing, publishing, literature, and storytelling with a best-selling author. We will discuss two of Li’s books, Ruby Lost and Found and Clues to the Universe (both available for checkout in the library). To register, please use this link: https://forms.gle/nLgUnE82uXHyDBLBA For Grades 6-8 who register, we will organize an earlier lunch time for them to attend.
