College Counseling Corner:
Greetings BISB Community,
As we know, the BASIS Curriculum is a globally recognized academic program built around exceptional teachers that yields extraordinary results. At BISB, we will experience the full impact of our program with our first graduating class in 2027. In just two short years, our first graduating class will experience the unique and exceptionally impactful Grade 12.
The final year at BASIS Independent is a bridge from traditional classroom learning to applying knowledge in a real context. By this time, most students have their Advanced Placement® (AP®) courses and graduation requirements completed. As such, this year is designed to be the culmination of their whole educational experience through three elements: daily college counseling courses, college-level Capstone, and the Senior Project, a unique opportunity to independently pursue their own research interests.
WHAT IS A CAPSTONE?
Capstone courses are the teacher-created counterpart to AP® courses. While AP® courses typically cover a breadth of content, Capstones offer students the opportunity to explore a topic’s depth. Our teachers’ talents shine as they develop these college-level original courses tied to their own academic passions. In each course, students transition from classroom-style learning typical of high school to seminar-based or lab-based learning typical of college courses.
SAMPLE SENIOR YEAR SCHEDULE
SAMPLING OF CAPSTONE COURSES OFFERED ACROSS THE BASIS NETWORK
Next week I will explain what Senior Projects are and share some amazing examples.
Thank you,
Ms. Kate Irving
College Counselor
Library Corner:
Hello from BISB Library!
The last two weeks our students in Kinder to Grade 3 have continued to read and love our Global Read Aloud books by author Minh Le. Last week we read Built to Last, illustrated by Dan Santat, and this week we read, Real to Me, illustrated by Raissa Figueoroa. Both stories focus on themes of friendship and imagination. We only have 1 week left of our GRA reads before we design and write postcards to our partner schools in the United States and India. I am looking forward to sharing these with the community.
Additionally, I am so excited to invite parents to join BISB Library’s first-ever parent-teacher book club, The Page Turners! Parents, teachers, and staff are invited to gather on Friday, December 6th in Connections to discuss the thrilling, and hilarious novel, Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderer’s by Jesse Q. Sutanto.
I ask that you please read the novel before the event to be ready to discuss and partaker in activities. 2 copies of the books will be available for checkout in the library next week, if you are not able to purchase your own copy. If you would like to purchase your own, Asia Books and Kinokuniya have them in stock.
For this event, it is adults only and light refreshments will be provided, but feel free to bring items to share if desired. To register, please complete the google form here: https://forms.gle/Cpq7erXXQKGWyN3dA
It is my hope that this club will focus on parents and teachers shared love of reading and the joy of storytelling. I hope to see many of you there!
Lastly, please note that the library will be CLOSED before and after school on the following days:
CLOSED – THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 28THAND FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 29TH
CLOSED – WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4TH
Thank you and Happy Reading,
Ms. Erika
Librarian

Visual Arts - AP 2D Design, AP Drawing and Middle School Art Elective
At BASIS, the Middle School Visual Arts program lays a strong foundation for future success in AP Art courses. Under Ms. Dash Swani’s guidance, students gain a rich understanding of essential techniques. With 6 years of experience and a Fine Arts degree from the renowned School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Ms. Swani equips her students with the skills needed to excel as artists. In recent projects, students explored additive and subtractive drawing techniques inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe, mastering the element of Value to create depth and contrast. This early exposure to concepts like Chiaroscuro and hands-on experience with graphite and charcoal ensures they are well-prepared to advance into AP-level visual arts studies.
Visual Arts at BASIS is an academically rigorous course. AP Art (Advanced Placement Art), is a College Board course designed to help students experience a college level art course. Enrollment in AP courses are beneficial for college applications. With over 25 years teaching experience, Mrs. Azarea Dzinic has welcomed students into AP 2D Design as well as AP Drawing. In AP Drawing, students develop their skills in creating their own ideas and creating unique works of art. Throughout the course they develop an inquiry that guides artmaking through practice, experimentation, and revision of materials, processes, and ideas while demonstrating drawing skills through painting, drawing, sequential art, printmaking, illustration and animation. In AP 2-D Art and Design, students demonstrate 2-D art and design skills through graphic design, sequential art, photography, collage, printmaking, illustration, industrial design, animation, game design and painting.
